Cruelty-Free Thanksgiving Recipe!

Hey Everyone - Here is a delicious and EASY Thanksgiving recipe from Don't Eat Me!that I hope you will try this holiday season!!My mom actually came up with this one, and it is mind-blowingly good!!!!!

No-Sausage Stuffed Acorn Squash (serves 4)

-2 medium acorn squash
-2 tbsp. olive oil
-1/4 c. chopped onion
-14 oz package no-sausage (recommend Gimme-Lean brand by Lightlife. Can usually be found in the produce section of the supermarket)
-small jar of applesauce
-maple syrup
-cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350. Halve and scoop out seeds from the middle of the squashes. Puncture the outside of the skins in several different places with a fork so it doesn't explode on you! Spread oil in a Pyrex (glass)baking dish large enough to hold the squahes cut-side down. Bake until soft for 30-40 minutes. If you are using another kind of baking dish, the squash could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, in a medium skillet, saute onions in the 2 tbsp. olive oil until soft. Break up no-sausage and add to the onions. Stir and chop no-sausage until nicely crumbled, and cooked according to instructions. Add enough applesauce to bind (approximately 4 tbsp.), leaving some left over for the garnish.
3. Remove squash from the oven, and flip them right side up. Brush the edges and insides of the squash with maple syrup. Fill them up with your no-sausage mixture and bake for another 10 minutes.
4. Sprinkle with a tiny pinch of cinnamon and serve with a little bowl of applesauce for people to pass around and top their squash as they please.

Summer Recipe from the No-Killin-Grillin Section of Don't Eat Me!

Hey Guys - Since it is the height of summer, I thought I'd share a recipe from the No-Killin Grillin section of Don't Eat Me! for you guys to enjoy! This is the best and biggest veggie-burger you will ever make! Easy and fun!

The Big Stack

This is so much better than the poor, cruel excuse for the fast food burger that it rhymes with that I double dare you to make it! You will literally feel yourself evolving as you eat!!! Two no-beef patties, not-so-secret-sauce, lettuce, no-cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!

8 no-beef patties (recommend Morning Star Farms vegan "grillers")
8 non-dairy American cheese slices (recommend Tofutti brand American style slices)
1 package of 8 sesame seed buns
1/4 of a head iceburg lettuce cut into thin shreds
1 tsp. dried minced onion, re-hydrated with 1 tsp. water for at least ten minutes pior to serving
24 hamburger dill pickle slices

NOT-SO-SECRET-SAUCE
1/2 cup egg-free mayo (recommend Vegenaise)
1 Tbsp. Chinese duck sauce
1/2 tsp. yellow mustard
1 tsp. pickle relish
2 pinches salt

1. Fire up the grill as you would for regular burgers
2. Combine all ingredients for not-so-secret-sauce in a small bowl. Whisk thoroughly and set aside.
3. Defrost no-beef patties until soft. Grill no-beef patties about 3-4 minutes on each side. Place a slice of no-cheese on top of each patty until it starts to melt. Remove to a warming plate.
4. To assemble The Big Stack: spread bottom bun with not-so-secret-sauce. Top with one cheeseburger patty, a sprinkle of minced onions, 3 pickle slices and a small bunch of lettuce shreds. Take another bun bottom (sound kinky) and stack it on top of what you have so far. spread this bottom with sauce and add another patty, onions, pickles and lettuce. Spread top bun with sauce and place on top.
I think you'll be loving it!

Important Petition to Help Animals on Factory Farms!

Hey Everyone - I was recently made aware of a fantastic petition that needs signatures to help animals on factory farms. This petition is asking for it to be mandatory by law that there are surveillance cameras placed in all slaughterhouses, factory farms and dairy farms. This would have an enormous impact on preventing so much of the abuse that occurs in these places. It would also make the prosecution of people who abuse these animals so much easier. I urge you all to please sign this important petition at www.thepetitionsite.com . When you get to the site, go to the care2 search engine at the top right hand corner of the page and type in "Put surveillance cameras in all slaughterhouses." Thank you!

Joy to the World!

Hey everyone - if any of you all out there ever doubted that animals have feelings and emotions just like we do, I think this video will change your mind. It is hard to think about eating another being who could enjoy the sound of music so much that they actually kick up their heels and dance!! Just click on the link to our facebook fanpage to watch the video of me and Heidi Harris singing to the cows at The Woodstock Farm Sanctuary!

Come to the June Jamboree at The Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary!

Hey Everyone - it is June, which means it is time for the June Jamboree at The Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, which is taking place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday 6/12 and 6/13, from 11am to 5pm! If you live in the NY/Conn./Mass. area, this is a really fun festival that is great for the whole family. There will be a puppet show and a castle bounce for the kids, yummy vegan food, great live music, and of course a chance to visit with the rescued farm animals!! Furthermore, our own Christen Napier's band, Cutleri, will be performing at the Jamboree on Saturday. The three lovely ladies who make up Cutleri are the one and only sirens of silverware, and they have been nice enough to invite me (Robin) up to play a couple songs with them at the show! For more info about the June Jamboree got to www.woodstocksanctuary.org

Help end the cruel force-feeding of ducks and geese for the production of foie gras!

Of all the shocking abuses inflicted upon farm animals, this one is certainly at the top of the list. Foie gras is a "delicacy" derived from shoving metal tubes down the throats of geese and ducks, and force-feeding them to the point where their livers are on the verge of exploding, having swollen up to ten times their normal size. The birds are then slaughtered and their livers are sold as an expensive "gourmet" specialty food.
The selling and purchasing of foie gras has already been banned in a dozen countries, the state of California, and the city of Chicago. This cruel product needs to be banned everywhere!
To take action, and learn how you can help end the suffering of ducks and geese in the production of foie gras, go to www.nofoiegras.org .

A Valentine for the Animals, and a Valentine for You!

DON'T EAT ME! hopes that you will put your love for farm animals and our planet into action this Valentine's day by signing the petition for Meat-Free Mondays at www.meatfreepetition.com, where anyone around the world can sign a meat-free petition for their country. The idea of having a nation-wide meat-free day was started in Belgium as a way to help combat global warming and world hunger, that are caused in part by modern animal agriculture.

Hopefully, in the near future, every day will be meat-free!

And now.......

Here at Late Bloomers Publishing, when we think of Valentine's day, we think of ...................................CHOCOLATE!!!!! So, we could not think of a better valentine to send to you, our beautiful fans, then the recipe for Hot Chocolate Drop Scones from the dairy and egg-free chapter of DON'T EAT ME! Happy V-Day!

Hot Chocolate Drop Scones from DON'T EAT ME! A Cookbook for Animal Lovers

Can’t get no satisfaction? Look no further. Blissfully hot chocolaty, moist, and melty at your beck and call. Just mix and drop onto baking sheets. No rolling necessary. I think I’m in love. Makes 24

-1 tbsp. non-dairy margarine (recommend Earth Balance)
-1 c. non-dairy chocolate chips (Can be found at health food stores and even some regular groceries like Super Stop and Shop)
-2 c. unbleached all-purpose f lour
-1/3 c. sugar
-1/2 c. cocoa powder
-1 tbsp. baking powder
-1/2 tsp. salt
-4 tsp. water
-3/4 c. Crisco vegetable shortening
-1 tsp. vanilla
-1 1/4 c. non-dairy creamer (can be found at regular supermarkets, health food stores and Trader Joes)
-confectioner’s sugar

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Melt margarine over very low heat and then add chocolate chips, mixing until melted. Remove from heat and set aside.
2. Sift all dry ingredients into a large bowl and whisk them together. Add water and cut in the Crisco, mixing with your hands until crumbly. Be careful not to over-mix. Add vanilla and non-dairy cream and mix with a wooden spoon until dry ingredients are absorbed. Again, do not over-mix.
3. Drop a tbsp. of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet. Drop a tsp. of the melted chocolate chips on top of that and cover with another tsp. of chocolate dough so that the melty chocolate is sandwiched in the middle. Repeat, spacing the dough drops about a half an inch apart. Make sure the oven rack is in the center of the oven before you set them in to bake. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes until they are fairly solid on top when you poke them. Cool slightly, dust with confectioner’s sugar and serve very warm. Come to me, my lovely!

LENTIL STEW WITH NO-SAUSAGE AND PASTA
(from DON'T EAT ME! A Cookbook for Animal Lovers)

This stew makes a hearty meal. I even eat it for breakfast sometimes because I can’t stop thinking about it from the night before! Serves 6

-1/3 lb. of ditalini pasta (or similar soup pasta)
-4 cloves garlic, diced
-6 tbsp. olive oil
-1 large onion, chopped
-2 carrots, peeled and chopped
-2 celery stalks, chopped
-1/2 tsp. ground coriander seed
-1/2 tsp. dried parsley f lakes
-1/3 c. white cooking wine
-1 1/3 cups lentils, rinsed
-2 32 oz. boxes vegetable stock
-8 oz. no-sausage links (recommend Smart Links by Lightlife)
-1/4 tsp. Chinese hot mustard (you know, it comes in those yellow packets you get with Chinese food)
-1 tsp. salt
-5 shakes black pepper

1. Boil water for pasta while you chop vegetables. Cook pasta, drain and set aside.
2. In large soup pot, sauté garlic in 4 tbsp. olive oil about two minutes. Add onion and cook about five minutes over medium heat, stirring frequently. Next add carrots, celery, coriander and parsley and sauté another 15 minutes more until nice and tender.
3. Next add the wine. Cook about two minutes. Add the lentils and the vegetable stock. Simmer over medium heat 30-35 minutes until the lentils are soft. (For a more soup-like consistency cover the pot while simmering).
4. Meanwhile, cook no-sausage according to instructions. Cool briefly and slice into disks (8-9 a link). Heat remaining oil in frying pan and whisk in the Chinese hot mustard. Add no-sausage and fry up for about 2 minutes.
5. Now it’s time for them all to meet: Add no-sausage, pasta, salt and pepper and heat and stir about five minutes. Serve hot.

Fan Drive!

Dear Friends,

We are thrilled with the response so far to DON'T EAT ME! A Cookbook for Animal Lovers.

For the next week, we are hosting a Facebook fan drive. Our goal is to reach 1000 fans by Monday, Jan 25th.

Here are the guidelines:

1. Within one week, ending Monday January 25th, invite as many friends as possible to become a fan of Don't Eat Me! Easiest way? Just click on the Don't Eat Me! fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/DONT-EAT-ME-A-Cookbook-for-Animal-Lovers/208180992507
and then click on "Suggest to Friends".

2. By 9pm on the 25th, check our fan list and note which of your friends that you invited actually joined. Send an email with the subject line "Fan Drive" to latebloomerspublishing@gmail.com with their names. (We are using the honor system here.) To be fair, and to begin calculations, we cannot accept lists after 9pm.

3. New fans who join within this week are also invited to participate in our fan drive, they would simply follow the same rules here.

4. First place winner will receive a free copy of DON'T EAT ME! A Cookbook for Animal Lovers. Second place winner will receive a free Don't Eat Me! mug. Third Place winner will receive a free Don't Eat Me! bumpersticker. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Jan 27th.

We are currently publishing this book ourselves. The printing quality of the book is excellent, but on-demand printing is expensive for the buyer (and this is without us making any profits!) We want to show potential publishers that there truly is a demand for this book, and we, the public, want it to be accessible in bookstores throughout the world! This is a grassroots effort, please help us spread the word...

Our sincere thanks!!!

Robin and Christen

DON'T EAT ME! Print Softcover now available...

Happy new year from Late Bloomers Publishing! We are now offering a first edition print version of the cookbook as a collectors item. We want our fans to know that we are not making any profit off of this first edition. The price of printing books "on demand" is much higher than we had anticipated, but we still want to make the print version available to our hardcore fans.

We are confident that a more affordable copy of the book will be released by years end. In order to accomplish this goal, we NEED fans like you to spread the word about DON'T EAT ME!, so that we can show larger publishers that there is indeed a very big market of consumers who have expressed an interest in this book! Our thanks in advance, Robin Gager and Christen Napier.
